Mt. Hekla

Drive: 120 min from Reykjavik

Height: 1491 m.

Terrain: Rough lava fields, ice and snow as the peak draws nearer.

Average ascend time: 3-4 hours.

Total average trip time: 7-8 hours.

Height gain: ~1040 meter

I was only 3 months old when I got introduced to Mt. Hekla in real action. My mother took me to the roots of Hekla in May 1970. Hekla was errupting and my grandmother insisted that she and my mom as well as few other family members would drive to Hekla to see this active mountain spewing out hot fire, lava and spreading magcial ash all over the ground. I must have fallen in love at first sight with volcano mountains and probabIy this is one of the reasons why I love hiking on mt. Hekla. It makes me totally aware of the power that mother earth has – you never know her  next move. Will Hekla erupt on your way up or on your way down or will it maintain it´s ,,fireless,, sleep during your journey on it´s red rough lava made mountain trail?

Mountain Hekla keeps you excited the whole time during your hike on it, because it is one of icelandic most famous volcano for it´s frequent eruption. Hekla has had 20 eruptions in the past 1200 years. It is rather easy to hike up this mountain and when you have reach it´s peak it has amazing view on a clear day. The view goes all the way to Fjallabak to Vatnajökull, Vestmanneyjar and beautiful scenery of mountains in the near by area. Since this is an active volcano it can be a bit risky to hike up mainly because sometimes it will only give 30 – 60 minutes notice/earthquakes before it erupts and if it that happens you better hit and run to the car and escape the scene. The only caution you must show during your hike is not to get too close to hot snowholes on the top.  These holes can have very hot temprature and leave burnmarks on your body if you get too close.

I recommend hiking  on Hekla on a clear sky day to enjoy all the view on the top. If you are hiking during winter time you will need clamp ons  for the snowy part. This is a perfect hike for the whole family.

Attn:  Always show extra caution and check before your start your hike if there has been signals of earthquakes inside of mt. Hekla or in the area close by.

This is a 5 days trip that I have done few times in the past and this summer 2013 I am planning on going from 5 – 9 of July. This trip is going to be a bit special because I am gathering a group of people who have two things in common. One is everybody loves hiking and two everybody is single but by the end of the trip some of the members might not be single anymore. So basically this is a modern way of gathering single nature loving people on a five days journey with the aim of sharing each other company with open  heart, lots of humor and the will to create real plesure and joy out of this adventure. Both Gay, Lesbians, Bisexual, Transgender and Straight people are welcome to join this tour. You simply sign up by send email to Halla on her address This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Tell Halla a little bit about yourself such as when you plan to arrive to Iceland, how experienced hiker you are and also good to know if you like to share a tent with some of the other hikers on the trip. You will need to bring your own hiking gear, food, sleeping bag and other accessories. As everybody on this trip is responsible for their own luggage. You can get further information by sending email directly to Halla kindly before 29th of June 2013. This trip will be filled with many entertaining suppliments such as yoga and meditation practise and story telling filled with lots and lots of laughter.

Day 1. We will start this trip  at Landmannalaugar which is located in the highlands of Iceland. In Landmannalaugar we can take a bath in natural hotsprings and even take a short hike in the area before the actual hike starts (only for those who have good endurance, the rest of the group can chilled in the hotsprings while the active ones hike in the area). Then we start to hike from Landmannalaugar to Álftavatn. Wonderful journey can expect some snow on the trails and we gain hights of ca 800 m. We camp out at Álftavatn.

Day 2. For the active ones we can hike about around the area in Álftavatn then we continue our hike to Emstrur there will be few rivers to cross so good to have extra shoes and plastic bags for those occations. On the way we will also wander through black desert, rather stunning landscape. We camp out at Emstrur.

Day 3. From Emstrur we hike towards Básar in Þórsmörk on the way we will pass by amazing and sublime canyon called Markarfljót. Again we will have to cross some glacier rivers. We camp out in Básar for two nites as it is wonderful to take day hikes in that area. We will also have a stock of food in Básar so this is going to be a nice fiesta for BBQ and grand meals and beverage for those who like to make a proper ,,skál,, a toast to celebrate this beautiful destination.

Day 4. A lovely day hike in this area. There are truly many hiking trails and options to choose from in  this location Básar in Þórsmörk and participants can make their free choice of where to go on day 4. We will simply view them all once we are there. But to name few you can hike to Valahnjúkur 468 m. Stakkholtsgjá wich is a beautiful little creek with a little stream in it. Tindfjöll, Húsadalur and Hvannárgil just to name few. Overnite again in Básar.

Day 5. We hike from Básar to the top of the famous glacier named Eyjafjallajökull that is mostly famous for erupting in 2010 and so many international as well as domestic flights got cancelled for almost one month. It is stunning to hike thru this area as the lava is still warm and you will see heat strokes steam up from the lava. Highest gain ca 1200 m. We will end the trip in Skógar where we take a bus back to Reykjavik.

So if you are single and feeling adventures please sign up and join us for this trip there is no charge fee for this trip you simply buy your own food supplies, campsite fee and share cost of shipping extra food into Básar and ofcourse you will have to pay your own bus ticket from destination Reykjavik-Landmannalaugar-Skógar-Reykjavik. Látrabjarg - Westfjords

Drive: 6-7 hours  from Reykjavik to Westfjords

Height: 441 m.

Lenth of hike: 6 - 7 km

Terrain: grass and easy trails along the cliffs.

Average ascend time: 2-3 hours.

Total average trip time: 5-6 hours.

Height gain: 411 meter

Start point: 30 m away from Bjargtangarviti/lighthouse

Látrabjarg is one of the places I would like to name the end of Europe as we know it. Here you have really reach the most western part of Europe a part from the island Flores that belongs to the Azora islands which is the property of Portugal. From Látrabjarg you have in head of you actually in far distance  the cost of Greenland, the  Antarctica and further west is the cost of America. (kindly note you can virtually  not see Greenland or the other places mention from Látrabjarg but nice to know what locations are in further distance, right)During summer time in this deserted place you have around 2 million birds who nest out in these beautiful cliffs that stand out on this 12 km long cliff shape coast. What I really love about this place is the fact that there are so many puffins here who have their home base in the cliffs during summer time and you are able to approach the birds so closely that you can almost pet them. A wonderful place for birdlovers and people who like to take photographs.

The cliffs are coated with grass layers and narrow gravel trails easy to access and hike on just be mindful not to get too close to the edge of the cliff than you might fall down 300 – 400 m  into the Atlantic Ocean not really a place to swim or survive from such a high fall he he he. During summer time you might even see sheep hopping freely around the cliff edeges  nippling on fresh grass.  Kindly note that the birds dig into the grass bank from the cliff side so pls be careful and stay in distance from the cliff edges.

During winter time and even into spring time the road to Látrabjarg might be closed due to too much snow or muddy roads. So definatly plan your hike to Látrabjarg in summer or latest in the month of September.

Tips for hiking in Iceland:

  1. Never start a long hike in new hiking boots. Make sure you have proper hiking boots that u are used to walk in and first aid kit with you  that it includes lots of band aids or socalled second skin that you can put on your feet if you start to get blisters from walking.
  2. Bring food with you that is easy to carry. If you are hiking for more than one day take some dry fruits with you, flatcakes/flat bread instead of wheat bread as the bread gets moldy rather quickly during hikes.
  3. For 2 or more days take with you: Tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mattrasse, back pack, first aid kit, toilet bag, 1 wc roll, food, drinks,  sun glasses, extra shoes to wade rivers, water bottle, lighter, mobile phone and charger, hiking canes or sticks good when you have to wade rivers and also to take off pressure from your knees and hips when you go downhill, pocket knife, Duct tape, earplugs, towel, sewing kit, warm clothes and clothes that are wind and water proofed. Comfortable hiking boots that you are used to. Good spirit and lots of laughter.
  4. In case of emergency always leave your travelling plan and mobile number with someone in town so they can follow up on you and send out rescue team in worst case senario.
  5. If you are hiking in a area that you are not familiar rule number one is to ask the locals about the area and make sure you have updated weather forcast before you start your journey.
